"What is Lumbar Stenosis?"
There are generally two types of lumbar spinal stenosis:
Central Spinal Stenosis.
Foraminal Stenosis.
Each cause compression on exiting spinal nerve root(s) and can present with radicular symptoms into one or both legs. This may include pain, numbness and/or weakness. Symptoms are usually worse in standing and walking positions.
The reason for the compression in the spinal canal or vertebral foramen is usually an abnormal build up of bone caused by age.
Conservative treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy.
A More aggressive approach may include surgical intervention and possible laminectomy.
